This year's Manhattan race left all of us with mixed emotions, but I would say we had a very successful day given the circumstances. We were missing 4 seniors (3 Var, 1 JV) going into the meet due to the SAT's and we knew we would not be operating at full strength. Additionally, the boys did not take their recovery days leading into the meet seriously. (I have heard rumors that the last several miles of the 8 mile run on Thursday were at about 5:40 pace... )
Despite our team losses and preparation, we did have several PR's as well as a number of runners participating for the first time at VanCortland Park. The course ran relatively slow for all teams (Nationally ranked Aisling Cuffe, Jim Rosa, Lizzy Predmore and others missed their anticipated times by a significant amount) but team scores were still relatively predictable. Guilderland Varsity placed 6th place in their heat behind tough NY teams St. Anthony's, Queensbury and Cicero-N.Syracuse. Our performance has momentarily bumped us out of the State Rankings. (which I am completely OK with) The JV team placed 7th, but they did so missing three of their top runners who would have significantly improved their position just based on their times from the Varsity race. And finally, our Frosh boys brought home the bacon with a #1 finish in the Mark Codd "D" race!
Congrats to:
- Andrew Coy (13:41) places him 14th all-time at VCP.
- Several of our JV runners (Alex Campione, Brien Miceli, Chris Whalen, Nathan Scott, Tom Benson, and Austin Malerba) who ran truly Varsity caliber races.
- Our Freshman Boys team whose incredible pack (3,4,11,13,14,15,28 out of 125 runners) earned them the team title. (Knute Armstrong, Pranav Nayak, Matt Pasquali, Jon Feil, Nick Bruni, Marc Dumoulin & Ritwik Dan - respectively)
-Shaker Boys for reclaiming some fame for Section 2. Their HUGE upset over #16US CBA-Lincroft NJ was amazing to witness and as Coach Drake and Coach Oates always used to say. "If you want to be great - you have to recognize greatness."
